Hi everyone, I would like to ask a question about a new sensatation I have been experiencing since yesterday afternoon... I feel ants crawling around my scalp... It seems to target the left side... I have washed my hair hoping I can wash them away... I ask if anyone can see anything walking around... I keep looking in the mirror thinking I will see something... It's driving me insane! I have a phobia of insects and the thought of feeling them crawling on me is driving me insane... I can also feel it on the back of my neck, my back and on my feet... Has anyone else felt this... I feel like I have fleas... :(

hi, there is a drug you can get from your doctor called
Nortriptolene...take it at night. It worked immediately for me 5 years ago
and I've been taking it ever since, good luck!

YOu should try to shake your head/hair out over a bathtub or white towel. i had/have the same feelings about a year ago and I shook my head thinking I had lice maybe and out pops a bug that I later had identified as collembola otherwise known as springtails and snow fleas. They are not known to be hosted by humans but since little is known about them they must have since developed and now harbor inside scalps and below in skin. Dr's will say you are crazy but keep searching for answers. What state do you reside in? I have tried many things to kill them but I kep finding live bugs. you wont see them in your hair and scalp but keep shaking your head out and hopefully you can identify that this is what it is. Look up collembola on google and skin findings and research you will come across some literature that was published regarding this. kepp in touch it is a long road ahead unfort!

I do get the creepy crawlies also, I think it is mostly from my medications. In the A.M. I get them as soon as my meds kick in.. then I get them around the time I need meds  in the P.M. I'm very used to it. But there are times when I swear there is a something crawling on my head or face or arm or leg. I also get electric shock feelings now and again. I'm just supposing that its a MS thing...

all of the responses were GREAT! Thank you... Once again I can eliminate the thought that I am going MAD... I guess i have to get use to the idea that new feelings will appear and disappear....

Well, you know you are not alone on this one.  I get them too at times...more so on my legs and upper back.  Very annoying.

    Hi there,

You've gotten some great feedback on here!  I hope you're feeling better already.

The symptom you describe is paresthesias, which basically refers to abnormal but not painful sensations like prickling, tingling, pins and needles or those crawling ants you describe.  Treatment options may be similar to managing some pain symptoms in MS.

The article When is a Prickle a Pain might be a good place to start in learning more about paresthesias, the Spring 2012 Momentum also had an article Getting a Handle on MS Pain that briefly addresses this subject (pages 22, 32).

Our Living with MS brochure notes that treatment options may include carbamazepine (Tegretol®), amitriptyline (Elavil®), gabapentin (Neurontin®), pregabalin (Lyrica®), duloxetine hydrochloride (Cymbalta®), or others.

    I hope that helps!

YES, I feel like bugs are crawling and biting my legs sometimes......but nothing is there...sometimes I feel elctric shocks going up my arms and the bugs on my head like you mention too! I started soaking in Aveeno Oatmeal soaks when this happens to calm these weird feelings down ....it helps most times....  I hope you get some relief soon!

FYI: You can make your own instead of buying a permade soak, just google and you will find tons of recipes

Hi Ladyjustine, I have dealt with the electrical shocks in different areas.... When I was admitted 11 months ago it was because my right arm and the right side of my face was on fire... These feelings occurred every 15 minutes for a month I thought i was going to eventually suffer a stroke or a heart attack. It was a nightmare... The crawly feeling is soft kind of like if I had several ants running around my scalp... It is really driving me insane... It happens sporadically through out the day... I can feel it on my neck and forehead.... I'm so paranoid of insects... I know there are no insects but the feeling is so similar... Thanks for the suggestion I'm going to try the oatmeal soak.... I also try to put a lot of lotion after I bathe... Aquaphor is really good it keeps the skin moisturized... But I can't put any on my scalp... Grrr! Thanks

Hi Sarah 74, it's definitely some more of the MS madness... Interesting so your crawly feelings you think might be bec of the meds.... Hmmm I'm not on any right now... I stopped my injections a month and a half ago and I guess I'm worried it might be due to not taking any meds. Thanks for the response.

Hi qzsue, this is new it started on Saturday... It happens throughout the day. It kind of feels as if the ants took a break and then they resume their stroll around my scalp... It's crazy.... So your numbness is in both legs? 2 years? How long have you been diagnosed? numbness on the left side of your head for how long? what does the neuro say? Oh dear.... I have lots of questions...
  • MSVee2011
Thanks for the response.... I will read the article today.
