Hi Ladies and Gents Has anyone ever had fears of starting a family knowing that you have MS? No one knows what the cause of MS is but there are theories such as genetics. I personally am terrified at the thought of passing it on to my child. Just my mind racing again lol

    Hello,
my MS started AFTER I had my only child.
everything I read says it's really not something that is strongly hereditary so I am not worried about my child "getting it" from me.  Not a single person in my family has ms that I know of and I am one of 8 children and have many cousins.
now that I have MS, I have decided not to have a second child.  being a mother is the best thing in the world.  But I know that with MS, 2 children would be too much for me.
my doc says pregnancy is great for RRMS :) because it can really take away the ms symptoms- while u r pregnant.  However I believe u r very likely to have a relapse within he first year after delivering.  That said, knowing it all YES I would have my precious child again in a heartbeat!!! Being a mom with MS is really really hard but in a crazy way it makes you appreciate life even more.
    hugs

    Hey there,

While MS is not hereditary, having a first-degree relative such as a parent or sibling with MS does significantly increase an individual's risk of developing the disease.  We have more information here:  http://www.nationalmssociety.org/What-is-MS/What-Causes-MS

Your post also reminds me that pregnancy is the current Momentum magazine cover story.  You can read it here if you haven’t seen it yet:  http://momentummagazineonline.com/pregnancy/

I went there when I was first diagnosed less than a year ago.  My sweet hubby and I want kids but we have an interesting set of circumstances: I have M.S., he has Crohn's and epilepsy.  At my last appointment we asked point blank the chances of having kids with seizures, M.S., or both.  My neurologist said there was less than a 5% chance of our kids inheriting either one, so we now look forward to having at least 2 or 3 kids.
It's ultimately a personal decision, but don't let fear make the decision for you.  I hope we both can have the families we want.

We are struggling with the same questions. I have had MS for 3.5 yrs and just changed meds for the third time. The plan is to hopefully become stable on this new medicine, Zinbryta, and then stop it after about a year and try to have a child. Good luck with everything! I've learned that you just can't let MS control your life. Just do what you and your partner feel is best.

I had my first steroids less than a week after I got diagnosed with MS.  One of the women in the room looked at me and said, "If you want to have a child, go for it - you'll feel better while you're pregnant!"  All of the other women in the room agreed.  I had both of my sons after I was diagnosed.

As for passing it along to a child, when my first child was born, I was told than they were much more at risk of having MS than a child whose mother didn't have MS.  That sounds horrible until you hear the actual numbers - 3-5% chance of having a child with MS.  I was more likely to have a child with Down's syndrome or any number of birth defects than to pass along MS.

So now I have a 12 year old and 10 year old.  They are both amazing kids.  I believe that my boys are more compassionate than most kids their age because they've got a mom with MS.
