I am soon to be 60 and am pretty stable with my MS (I say that but the summer heat just hit).  I realized that my strength has been going in my upper body, I think part MS and a lot  from lack of exercise.   I don't have a lot of money to put into this but am wondering if any one has used a personal trainer who has MS experience or a gym.  I am pretty much bound to use things in DC, at least for the summer as I do not have AC in my car.

I think moderate strength training would help my overall health and balance.  Does anyone have suggestions?

Ab Ripper X is one of the best abdominal workouts around. It builds core strength by using the movements of your hips and chest. The simple exercises are painful, but produce rewarding results. ab ripper X should be done at least every other day.

    Hi,

I'm older also and can relate.  I'm getting progressively weaker and try to find the attitude to keep exercising.  I started going to the rehab section of my local hospital for a few exercise sessions.  The expense got old quick but I went away with some good notes and direction to continue on my own.  There was nothing that was too difficult or took special equipment to continue at home and with no expense.  I'm doing my best to save for retirement so money is an issue to me for sure.  I would absorb all I could from just a few exercise sessions and continue on your own like I do.  Hang in there..................

Hi! I had the same issues with muscle loss (even though I'm not quite 50) so I did some research and found David Lyons, who is a bodybuilder with MS. Google his name and it will pull up the health and fitness program he developed that specifically addresses the issues we have with MS. I wished time and again that I had learned about his work sooner. He started "The MS fitness challenge " and works with trainers across the country do that they can best address the fitness needs of people with MS. He's an inspiration so I hope you'll look him up because he's the only one I've found that truly knows what he's talking about

Thank you for this.  There is a guy who runs a yoga studio who is also a PT but not accepting new people.

Denise, I am also going to be 60. I started doing  strength training at my local park district in January. It has done amazing things for me mentaly, spiritually and physically. I highly recommend it. With your doctor's ok though. My philosophy is, I have to strengthen what I have because maybe it'll kast longer if I'm stronger. Not sure if that makes sense. It also clears my mind and actually gives me more energy. I'm just sorry I didn't start sooner. But hey, better late than never. Just remember, start slow and don't over heat. Because we both know what happens next! Hope this helps and good for you for thinking about it. GOOD LUCK!

Denise, I hope you have found something with all these good suggestions. I'm so happy you were able to ask this question. I am 48 years old in believe strongly that exercise will benefit everyone even those without a disease like Ms. It clears the mind, relieves stress and gets the blood flowing which is good. I do not work so my funds are low everything I do is that home. I tried to do a couple of exercises every morning ( modified push-ups and dips, and some crunches) then in the afternoon I do some stretching with yoga and meditation. Every night before bed I do squats and more crunches. I participated in a exercise study for people with MS. They sent us home with a booklet of the six exercises that we did twice a week. Try to incorporate them into my afternoon workouts. Whatever you do just do something. Sounds like you're on the right track with lots of good suggestions. Good luck

    Hey Denise,

Try our online strength training workout program designed for MS at www.msptathome.com
    It's only $18.95/month

It is a strength training, high-intensity and low-impact style of exercising that engages your muscles at a high level while also keeping your body safe from injury. It's very guided with our instructors giving you clear details on how to execute each exercise as well as how to progress as you get stronger. It is available for all spectrums of MS, but from your post, I'd suggest you try our "standing" series.

We would love to help you get stronger and feeling great!
