It is a pill I must take early in the morning then another two hours later. If I take it too late I am up all night. It is taken for five days with two days off so I do not build an immunity to the affect. I take it after food.

One consideration the doctor mentioned  before prescribing was constipation. If it is for me??? probiotics prevent it.

Maria, I have a lot of medical problems, 5 doctors, and am on a lot of prescriptions. I had one doctor change a prescription and caused a cascade of problems. So now I research every new prescription myself. When I recently complained (again) about fatigue Dr. Kinkel prescribed amantadine. I researched it extensively. I do see recommended splitting the dose, lowering the dose for those with kidney impairment or those over 65 (I’m 66 and he put me on full dose but my blood levels are checked monthly for another doctor And this tells us kidney function) because the kidneys not excreting in a normal fashion could cause build up - but no where did I see anything about skipping days.
Amantadine is not a stimulant. It cannot develop a tolerance. It is an antiviral medication.
There is a connection between MS and some viruses like chickenpox and Epstein Barr. Amantadine is an anti-viral and was once used as standard treatment for the flu. If the virus triggered some auto-immune MS response it would explain why Amantadine works for some people, those with virus exposure, and not others.  I am very curious now what doses/days other doctors are prescribing. Or maybe, if when I had Epstein Barr I had taken amantadine, the MS wouldn’t be so bad today.  Much more research needs to be done with amantadine.
